چکیده

Geographic dynamics refers to the development of processes that shape our environment. While geographic dynamics is central to geographic understanding, the current GIS technology is incapable of capturing information that reflects the working of geographic processes, such as spread of a wildfire, development of a weather system, and propagation of a disease. Inability to represent geographic dynamics excludes GIS capability to mine information about spatiotemporal behaviors which can lead to new insights into understanding evolution and influences of geographic processes. Since geographic dynamics is, by definition, spatial and temporal, GIS data models must be able to handle temporal information to represent geographic dynamics. The current GIS data models organize data based on how data are collected. Because geographic data are collected at a location or from an area, GIS data objects are centered at location and geometry. Geographic semantics (meanings) of a location are considered as attributes of the location. When time becomes necessary, geographic semantics of the location will be updated accordingly.

An architecture for the SPIN! spatial data mining platform

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are widely used for analysing and visualizing georeferenced data. In the last few years, a new generation of Geographic Information Systems has emerged that extends the interactivity of dynamically generated maps, greatly enhancing visual exploratory data analysis ([1], [3], [6], [13]). While being an exciting development for automating cartography, these sy...

Spatial Data Warehouse - A Prototype

Nowadays, there are an emergence of spatial or geographic data stored in several and heterogeneous databases, mostly in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The diversity of GIS and the increasing accumulation of non-spatial (simple attributes) and spatial (geometric shapes) data make it difficult to apply conventional OLAP and data mining tools. Thus, the need to build a spatial data warehous...

GeoSpatial Data Analysis Using Markov Models

The advances in survey and data collection techniques over the last decade have dramatically enhanced our capabilities to collect terabytes of geographic data on a daily basis. However, the wealth of geographic data cannot be fully realized when information implicit in data is difficult to discern. This confronts us with an urgent need for new methods and tools that can intelligently and automa...

Representing and Visualizing Travel Diary Data: A Spatio-temporal GIS Approach

Travel diary data (TDD) is an important disaggregate data source for transportation research. It is an example of multi-dimensional data that combines spatial, temporal, and attribute information. A proper representation of TDD can help researchers extract useful information from the data set. Current GIS is mainly designed to handle spatial and attribute data, lacking the representation of tem...

Multimedia Gis: Analysis and Visualization of Spatial and Temporal Geographic Information

This paper discussed the concepts and development of a multimedia geographic information system (GIS) for analyzing and visualizing both spatial and temporal geographic information in image/vector format as well as multimedia information in descriptive text, graphics, ground photographs and digital video clips. The multimedia GIS presents a new way to analyze and visualize geographic informatio...
